MITO
Project MITO aims at improving the income situation for Nepali farmers and small stakeholders by using the potential of wild walnut trees. By developing a machine which Nepali farmers will be able to utilize in order to obtain valuable walnut oil, we want to take the first step towards a sustainable business case.
In many villages, organic walnut oil is currently being produced without an economic value chain. The main reason for this is the slow production of the oil. Because of the hard shell of the local walnut, cracking and separating requires incredibly tedious manual labour.
Our goal is to develop a scalable process to produce oil more efficiently. A simple user-friendly machine evolves as a result of a methodical user-centered development process. The difficulty lies in the development of a product which is as simple as possible. Fast iterations and testing leads to success on the application level.
MITO started as a collaboration of two students from the DownloadDesign & Technology Lab. The project is being developed in cooperation with Helvetas. Currently, we are four motivated MAVT students and a research assistant working at the pd|z.
