Patrick Beutler
Patrick grew up in Niederhasli near Zurich. After his apprenticeship as a design engineer, he studied mechanical engineering at ETH Zurich. In his bachelor thesis he developed an additive manufactured camping stove burner (PeakBoil) at the Design and Technology Lab, which won the 3D Pioneers Challenge Design Award 2018. In his master studies, Patrick focused on product development, design optimization and additive manufacturing. His master thesis investigated the automated design of flow channels considering manufacturing restrictions of additive manufacturing, specially addressing the overhang constraint.
In his doctoral studies, he continues his research on optimized and automated design generation. He combines the design freedom of AM and considers the design restrictions of AM in design algorithms to create improved and optimized AM designs in short time. The developed algorithms are intended to support engineers in performing their tasks more efficiently and with consistent quality. Accordingly, the algorithms include various options for manipulating the result so that the output matches the user's expectations. Applications range from components for superconducting magnets to hydraulic manifolds and animal trackers.
